What happens if the receiver refuses to accept a delivery?

If a receiver refuses delivery, the carrier cannot complete the consignment as contracted and must immediately notify the sender and await instructions. Under CMR, the sender can redirect the goods to a different address, authorise temporary storage at a nearby warehouse, or instruct the carrier to return the goods to origin. Storage costs and return transport costs are charged to the sender unless the delivery refusal resulted from carrier error or damage caused during transit — in which case the carrier bears the costs.
