What is the difference between a carrier and a shipper?

The shipper sends the goods and holds the commercial interest in them. The carrier transports them. They sit on opposite sides of the same contract of carriage, the shipper as the party engaging transport and the carrier as the party performing it. On a consignment note the shipper appears as consignor and the carrier in the carrier field.
