What is an extended Safety Data Sheet (eSDS) and when does it apply?

An extended SDS adds one or more exposure scenario annexes to the standard 16-section document. Exposure scenarios describe the conditions under which a REACH-registered substance can be safely handled by downstream users — covering transport, storage, and specific industrial use conditions. The eSDS is required when a manufacturer or importer registers a substance under REACH and has identified specific uses for it in their Chemical Safety Assessment. Downstream users receiving an eSDS must confirm that their actual use conditions fall within the described scenarios. If they do not, the downstream user must notify the supplier or prepare their own Chemical Safety Report. The eSDS applies to professional and industrial supply chains — not to consumer product distribution.
