Is drayage the same as last mile delivery?

Drayage and last mile delivery are two entirely separate legs with no operational overlap. Drayage moves a sealed, intact container as a single unit — from the terminal gate to a warehouse. Last mile delivery moves individual goods from that warehouse to the end recipient after the container has been opened, unloaded, and sorted. The deconsolidation process at the warehouse is the boundary between them. A drayage carrier handles one container. A last mile carrier handles individual parcels, pallets, or consignments destined for separate recipients.
