What does lead time mean in shipping?

In shipping, lead time is the planned period from the moment a carrier picks up the consignment to the moment it is delivered to the receiver — the pickup-to-delivery window the carrier commits to on the service booked. This is narrower than the full logistics lead time, which also includes the order processing time that occurs before the carrier collects.
