What is an eCMR and how does it differ from a paper CMR consignment note?

An eCMR is the electronic version of the CMR consignment note — legally recognised under the 2008 Additional Protocol to the CMR Convention, carrying the same legal weight as the paper original for all purposes under the Convention. Approximately 377 million eCMRs are used annually for cross-border EU transport. The eCMR gives the carrier, shipper, and receiver simultaneous real-time access to the same document — eliminating the three-copy paper distribution process required under the 1956 framework and allowing the signed delivery confirmation to reach all parties within seconds of the consignee's digital signature at the delivery point.
