What is the difference between a hub and a cross-dock terminal?

A hub is a network position — where a facility sits in a carrier's route hierarchy. A cross-dock terminal is a facility type defined by building layout and transfer method. Most carrier hubs function as cross-dock terminals, but hub identifies network position; cross-dock terminal identifies the physical facility type.
