A proper shipping name is the official transport name assigned to a dangerous substance in ADR Table A — the exact wording that must appear on the transport document, package labels, and shipping papers alongside the UN number. Trade names, brand names, and chemical synonyms cannot replace it. UN 1203 must appear as "PETROL," "GASOLINE," or "MOTOR SPIRIT" — all three are accepted proper shipping names listed for that entry in Table A. For n.o.s. entries, the proper shipping name includes the generic group description plus the technical name of the specific substance in brackets. The UN number and proper shipping name together form the first two mandatory fields of every ADR dangerous goods description.
