How does 5PL differ from a TMS software platform?

A Transport Management System gives the shipper tools to plan, book, and track shipments — the shipper or 3PL operates those tools internally. A 5PL is an active orchestrator: it manages supply chain operations across multiple clients using technology, taking operational accountability for outcomes across a shared platform. A TMS provides capability. A 5PL provides service plus capability — it makes decisions, coordinates 4PLs and 3PLs, and pools data and carrier relationships across its entire client base simultaneously. The shipper does not operate the 5PL's platform; it receives the outcomes the platform produces.
