What is the difference between cross-docking and transloading?

Cross-docking moves goods between vehicles of the same transport mode — truck to truck — at a terminal without storage. Transloading moves goods between different transport modes — rail to truck or sea container to road vehicle. Both avoid intermediate warehousing but serve different positions in a multimodal transport network.
